Garçote
Went to Quinta do Lago today to try and photograph the Little Crakes (Porzana parva), one adult and one juvenile, but with no success.
This shot of a juvenile Garçote (Ixobrychus minutus) was a "consolation prize".
1Dmk3, 500mm f/4 + 1.4 TCII
"Hand-held", approximately 50% crop.

Wonderful photo, Colin.
Lighting, definition, every thing perfect! Congratulations

PS: Did you saw the Little Crakes (Porzana parva)?

Excellent photo!
Beyond what already was said above, I also like the composition.
Great "consolation prize"

Re: Garçote
Thank you Pedro, Paulo and José for your comments. I took quite a lot of shots of this bird but this was the only one without any vegetation in front of the bird. I also liked the composition and the way the curve of the reed matches the pose of the bird. I only wish I could get as close as Pedro did with some of his recent shots of this species.
The Porzana parva was apparently seen again one hour after I left the lagoon!! Some rather poor shots were posted on SPEA's Noticiário 358 yesterday. I might try for it again tomorrow.

Garçote juvenile
Another thing that I love in these birds is the way they hold on to reed, in this photograph, one foot for each side, it is spectacular

Pedro,
I also love the way that these birds fly into a reed-bed, disappear, and then suddenly begin climbing up the reed-stems.
I went back today to Qta do Lago but it was very windy and birds not showing very well - also a family of Otters (Lontras?) fishing for eels were disturbing the birds.
This was a very distant shot:
I also now realise that this is not a juvenile but a female (probably sub-adult, 2nd year bird).
I did see the Little Crake (Porzana parva) but only a brief glimpse as it fed within the reed-bed; no photos, but will try again - it is such a small bird.
