Dendrocopus minor
Not an easy bird to photograph - they are always on the "other side" of the branch or tree trunk!

Re: Dendrocopus minor
Thanks guys,
I looked at other shots taken at the same time and most were spoiled by the fact that in most of them the bird had its "third eyelid" closed - I have only ever noticed this before in shots of Common Sandpiper (Maçarico-das-rochas) - do all birds have this "third eyelid"?
Another of the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, with eyes fully open!:
Feliz Natal e Bom Ano Novo para todos,
Colin

Hi Colin,
Great pictures! It is one of my favourite birds!
I have notices the third ewelid in some pictures I took of Dipper.
Best wishes,
Gonçalo

Re: Dendrocopus minor
Thanks again Gonçalo, and Carlos. This is also one of my favourite birds. I have only ever seen one individual in the U.K. - it landed on a picnic table at a nature reserve and I could not believe how small it was. I now hear them frequently in spring in Algarve (how can such a small bird make so much noise?) but they are very elusive, especially the rather plainly-marked females.
Same bird with "lunch":
